We know that physical activity is related to positive cognitive function, but we don't know why. This work explores the neurophysiological mechanisms that underpin the cognitive benefits of physical activity in young people, by utilising advanced multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology. This foundational research is being undertaken in collaboration with Mātai Medical Research Institute, and Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa.
In this project, children are randomised to either an acute high intensity physical activity session, a sedentary activity, or a volitional outdoor play activity. Before and after the activity session, a non-invasive brain scan is performed using functional MRI. These scans help us observe any changes in brain structure or function that may be linked to the physical activity.
Knowledge of these neurophysiological mechanisms will provide a greater scientific basis for the development of interventions to enhance cognitive performance in young people. Acute physical activity interventions could improve cognitive function and learning capacity in school settings, particularly in those experiencing learning difficulties.
